The complete journey, six stages

Stage 1, Check & choose

Typical timing: before you do anything else, ideally weeks before you plan to apply.

Your passport decides whether you use the subclass 417 Working Holiday visa or the subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa, not a preference. This stage is about confirming that, checking the age window for your passport, and identifying whether your country needs a letter of support or sits in the China, India, Vietnam ballot.

Your passport, not a preference, decides which visa you apply for.

Stage 2, Prepare & apply

Typical timing: 1 to 4 weeks to gather documents, then 2 to 8 weeks of processing after you lodge.

This is the document-heavy stage: identity, funds, health, and any education or English evidence your passport requires, gathered and lodged correctly in ImmiAccount. Most delays at this stage come from incomplete evidence, not from an eligibility problem.

• Gather passport, identity and funds evidence
• Translate any non-English documents
• Lodge in ImmiAccount and pay the AUD840.00 application charge
• Do not book travel until the visa is granted in writing

Stage 3, Arrive & land

Typical timing: your first 1 to 2 weeks in Australia.

The visa's 12-month clock starts the moment you enter Australia. The first fortnight is about getting functional: a bank account, a tax file number, a phone plan, and somewhere to sleep that isn't costing hostel rates indefinitely.

• Open a bank account, ideally started online before you land
• Apply for a Tax File Number as soon as you have an address
• Get a SIM and confirm your accommodation for the first two weeks
• Start the job search, hospitality and retail move fast

Sydney or the Gold Coast, most people base themselves in one of the two.

Stage 4, Work & earn

Typical timing: ongoing, for as much of the 12 months as you want to work.

Full work rights, on any kind of work, anywhere in the country. The one structural limit is roughly six months with the same employer. This is also the stage where, if a second year is on your mind, it's worth starting to think about regional specified work sooner rather than later.

• Casual minimum wage runs around A$33.05 an hour [VERIFY]
• Pay tax under the working holiday maker tax table from the first dollar
• Superannuation accrues above a monthly earnings threshold, reclaimable when you leave
• You're protected by normal Australian workplace law regardless of visa status

Stage 5, Study English

Typical timing: optional, up to 4 months (17 weeks) at any point during your visa.

Not everyone does this stage, but it's one of the highest-leverage ones if English is a genuine gate for you, either because your 462 passport requires evidence of it, or because stronger English simply opens more and better jobs.

• Up to 4 months of study is allowed without a separate student visa

• A natural bridge into a Student visa (500) if you want to keep going

Four months is enough to genuinely move an English level.

Stage 6, Extend or move on

Typical timing: from month 3 onward, if a second or third year is the plan.

88 days of specified regional work makes you eligible for a second visa. A further 179 days on the second visa makes you eligible for a third. If extending isn't the plan, this is also the stage to start thinking about what comes next, student, partner, or an employer-sponsored pathway, well before your final visa expires.
